Style on the Road: Planning and Packing

I've traveled more often than I stayed at home in September and October, and I have to admit I'm not very good at trying to balance my normal life with flying all over the country. Two friends' weddings, one trip to see family, three work trips and it feels so good to be home!

IMG_1217IMG_1223

While on the road I try to travel light and in style, and I've gotten a few questions about it, so I thought I'd share some of my packing tips and tricks.

On the plane
Some guidelines for what to wear when you're flying.
  • Classy, in case of a first class upgrade (!)
  • Comfortable, because all of my flights are cross-country and warm, because planes are cold
  • Versatile, so I can rewear it, because I pack with only a carry on - even for a ten day trip
  • Wrinkle-free, so I can look presentable if I have to meet anyone after 9 hours of travel
[One thing I should note is that I'm a grad school recruiter, so the dress code when I'm on the road can be pretty laid back. I never wear heels on a flight, or a suit.]

My favorite ensemble is:

In my suitcase
  1. Shoes. By far the hardest thing to pack is shoes - they're less easy to remix and take up so much space! On my last trip I was gone for ten days and my trip included a wedding, a visit to my family, and work - in places where temps ranged from 40-75. I would have preferred to have about seven pairs with, but I forced myself to bring only four: dressy sandals, black pumps, flat boots and brogues. Always wear boots on the plane, because they're a beast to pack.
  2. Clothes that Mix and Match. This seems obvious, but is always harder in practice. The only way to guarantee what I'm bringing will work in several outfits is for me to layout all those outfits on my bed before packing. Every item needs to be worn at least twice - cardigan, blazer and pants should be remixable 3 times on a long trip. The only exception for me was the dress I wore to the wedding.
  3. Accessories. The only way I will pack or wear accessories is if I plan them as carefully as I plan my outfits. One of the most frustrating parts of travel for me is when I don't have my arsenal of belts, scarves, necklaces, earrings and barrettes or headbands to choose from each day. I take two belts - a utility and an accent belt, and put my jewelry in a cloth roll I bought on Etsy. I usually wear a scarf on the plane.
  4. Folding. I'm a fan of the rolling method, but I don't roll everything. Pants and dresses always get rolled and placed on the bottom, but tops do not. I usually bundle pack tops (see #2 here) where I stack all my tops together and fold them around another item.
  5. Packing: Some pro packers like the idea of putting clothing in a large clear ziploc bag so you can compress the air out of as much of your clothes as possible, and compartmentalize. I like this idea for delicate tops and shoes, but I don't pack anything else in plastic bags. I pack rolled items at the bottom with shoes, tops towards the bottom of the suitcase and toiletries go at the top of the suitcase near the zipper for easy access when going through security.
  6. Toiletries. Pack light on makeup. I take the smallest toiletries bag I own and typically bring one foundation-type product, mascara, eyeliner, two eye shadows, one blush and three brushes. Other than the foundation it fits in a snack-size ziploc bag. When I'm staying in a hotel or visiting my family I never pack a hair dryer, or shampoo/conditioner/body wash.
  7. Outerwear. Most of the time I'm traveling from a temperate climate (San Diego) to a colder climate, and have to pack a coat that I don't want to wear during travel. I travel with the coat thrown over my arm or my tote bag and then after loading in my carry on suitcase, I find a place where I can lay it flat over other items in the overhead bin. (*you should always to try to this after the plane has been boarded, because there may not be room, or you may have your stuff squished when someone tries to squeeze their luggage in too small a space.)
  8. Extras. Don't forget the little things! I always use a packing list, even though I know exactly what I'm packing so I don't forget things like: socks, the appropriate underwear, bandaids, feminine products, umbrella, glasses, medications.

Any questions? I feel like there are million resources out there with packing advice (here is one of my favorite collections: http://www.academichic.com/tag/packing/ ), but I hope this was helpful!

Fashion trends I love

I'm back, later than expected, with a set of fashion trends I am into.

My picks are from a mix of seasons, because in Southern California it's appropriate to wear any season's clothing year-round, but it's also been kind of chilly lately.

Click on the link for all the item details.

  1. Striped layers: lots of options with stripes these days, but I'm a fan of the striped blazer/cardigan looks
  2. Silky blouses: so classy! I'd wear it tucked in with slim pants or belted over a pencil skirt. Plus, colors!
  3. Color-blocking -Don't you love when colors that get put together unexpectedly for you?
  4. Boyfriend blazers - Can I get a holla for comfortable blazers? No more scrunched shoulders with this casual style!
  5. Polka dots - they're still around for good reason: red, blue, or my favorite - camel/black combination.
  6. Booties - E got me a pair for Christmas that I wear...a lot. So comfy, so fun.
  7. Statement necklaces - dress up any boring outfit. They make me want to break out my many neutral separates.
  8. Big patterns - There have been bikes, elephants, birds. I love this take on patterns.
  9. Neon accents - I just love how neon looks in contrast with muted colors and fabrics, like on this little bag from shopbop!
Are any of these on your list too?

Fashion trends I'm just not into

As I have spent more time on fashion blogs (including my own) and more time thinking about how to wear clothing better, it's been important to me to have a certain perspective towards fashion trends. I love to read about them all, and appreciate some of them on others, but I have made a personal rule to only implement trends that are me. It's so easy to see something cute on a friend or fashion blogger and immediately want to recreate the look, but I started realizing that every outfit isn't recreate-able. That approach doesn't always help me develop a personal style.

Here are few trends that just aren't 'me'.

Fashion Trends I'm not into

  1. Chambray and lace. For some reason, I just can't into this combination. Maybe because I'm not really a lace girl?
  2. Faux fur vest.
  3. Crazy nail designs. I'm not sure why, but it seems like fashion blogs everywhere recently have been featuring crazy hand-painted nail designs. I can't even keep a solid color on my nails for 24 hours - I cannot do this!
  4. Leather leggings. The thought of doing anything while wearing tight, unbreathe-able leather...eek.
  5. Leopard. No hate - I know how many people love it. But it's just not me at all.
  6. Denim jackets. Ever since I retired the only denim jacket I owned in jr. high, I don't think I'll bring myself to buy another.

I don't intend this post to be critical, I just want to encourage you all that every trend isn't for every body. Now it's your turn - what are some trends that just don't work for you?

Coming up: a post on trends I love!

ps. Trends men love to hate.

Create: my style

One creative thing I've worked on this year (besides dozens of half-finished crafty projects at home) is my style tumblr blog.  After participating in a few fashion challenges over the last year, I had gotten used to taking pictures of my outfits everyday, so in April I created an outlet for those pictures:

http://lattestyle.tumblr.com

I wasn't really sure it was going to work considering I blog 3-5 times a week already here. But I didn't want to turn this blog into a style blog, so it's been a great place to grow and explore my interest in fashion.

This side project has also allowed me to write in a way that is slightly more sarcastic and stream-of-consciousness than usual (and maybe a little more like my real-life persona?). So it's been a fun outlet for creative writing, as well as creative dressing. My readership has crawled up little by little over there, and now about 90 people follow my every-few-days, daily style tumbls.

Here are a few of my favorite outfits from the past 8 months since I started it. (if you click on the photos, they'll link to the posts).

p.s. If you follow me here or there, thank you! It wouldn't be nearly as much fun without you around.

The 10th prompt is: Create. Share a creative project you undertook this year (art, writing, DIY, cooking, home decoration, crafts, photography … whatever comes to mind). How do you use your creativity to express yourself?

Work Tote

Disclaimer: I received this tote bag from Red Envelope in exchange for this review. All opinions are my own.

I have a large collection of totes in all different sizes and shapes. From an enormous canvas beach tote from a long ago Victoria's Secret order, to the white pleather tote from Target I used for school, to the monogrammed tote I got as a bachelorette party gift with my new married initials.

But I'm still a sucker for a good tote, and was excited when Red Envelope offered to send me one in exchange for this review. It came a few weeks so I've had a chance to use it for the last few weeks and I love it. [leather + canvas tote]

IMG_0850

The tote is a heavy canvas material with a sleek leather stripe on the side, and the bottom. It holds its shape really well standing up. The bottom is sturdy with metal toes which prevent wear and dirt from the bottom of it. The past few months, the amount of things I'm taking to and from work has kept growing, but this tote has managed to fit everything for work. My purse, my lunch, a sweater, a book for my lunch break. Even my work laptop if I need to take it home on the evening!

12-14a

It's easily my new favorite!

Design*Sponge in San Diego!

(video by the talented Ryan of Pacing the Panic Room)

The weekend before last, on the way from picking up my parents from the airport, I arranged to make a quick pit stop at West Elm in Mission Valley so I could get an autograph on my copy of Grace Bonney's gorgeous new tome. I'm sure none of you need an introduction to Design*Sponge, but it's easily the most inspiring site on simple, doable DIY, beautiful decor and classy living spaces (I especially love tvheir "Living in ..." features - style inspiration from great movies)

Even though I was only there for a few minutes towards the end of the event, it was still lovely to meet Grace and thank her for all her inspiration. She's lovely and gracious. I'm so glad the book tour stopped in San Diego!

How to Be A Girl

A few months ago I discovered these amazing tutorial videos by The Hairpin blogger/This American Life producer Jane Feltes. (p.s. if you don't already listen to This American Life weekly you certainly should. It's my favorite podcast!)

Jane is one of those women that just seems fabulous. She is witty and classy, and you just instantly want to invite her out on a girls night. Plus, she knows what she's doing when it comes to girly-ness.

I grew up around no one who used makeup regularly. The only times my mama has ever worn makeup is at my wedding and my sister's wedding. I'm the oldest girl in my family so I never had anyone to mimic or steal blush from. As a result I have had a lot of trial and error in the makeup department - from wearing horrible colors of eyeshadow, to my enormous eyebrows, to waay too much bronzer. Only in the last couple of years have I started really attempting to buy quality makeup and wear it well.

You should really watch all of Jane's videos, but here are a few of my favorites

Happy Friday, friends!

Friday Faves

We just got news that there is a baby on her way. (10 days early!) I have to say, I never really understood the emotions experienced when someone you love is having a baby. I used to roll my eyes at all the 'auntie' blog posts and facebook photos. But now that one of my good friends is about to give birth, I'm in awe that someone I love is experiencing something so beautiful and life-changing. I want to cry about it and the baby's not even here yet...

Also, today I'm being hosted on J's Everyday Fashion blog with an outfit re-creation I did based on a thrifted military style blazer. Check it out!

Finally, I got this Ark & Co printed bird blouse from Piperlime with a gift card a few weeks ago. I loved it online, but but it ended up being a little different than I had thought (looser, less structured) and I was having trouble styling it. So with the help of polyvore, I put a couple style boards for inspiration. Anything you'd like to add?

[more] new hair

Day 16

IMG_5437

Sorry if this is sort of becoming a theme every eight weeks. (see also: my last haircut, and the one before that, and the one before that) But I did some new with my hair. [Again.] I love it! [again]. Bonus: my hair dresser gives me a glass of wine when I come in, which was well-appreciated after a really difficult day for me at work yesterday. It is my new plan to schedule haircuts after really crappy work days so I can enjoy a head massage while sipping vino. I felt like a new woman when I left!

Day 15: menswear

Day 16: menswear

Then I came home and discovered the blog Glamourai. And I fell in love with her hair. Why has the internets not revealed this blog to me before? Anyway, after pinning about seven images of her lovely 'do, I stumbled across a great tutorial on curling short hair. yay! I've been wanting to curl my hair for a year, and just wasn't brave enough to attempt it. Stay tuned for the results...

heels: Aldo, thrifted

[ps. These photos are from Day 16 of the 21 Day Challenge. I'm still hanging in there! The theme was menswear and I wore these trousers again. I love them almost as much as my hair.]

pps. Thanks for weighing in on our luggage dilemma! We're still considering what to buy, but I'll definitely review whatever we end up with.

Banana Republic launches Mad Men Collection!

Somebody please pinch me.
MAD MEN. From Banana Republic?
Yes, please.

I'm a huge fan of BR anyway - a lot of my closet is filled with their stuff.
And I know we have all been obsessed with the fashion featured on Mad Men.
A perfect marriage, in my opinion.

(I do wish, like Fantabulously Frugal, that they would have used a fuller-figured model for some of the very 'Joan' pieces that were obviously built for curves.)

While I love what the BR designers put together - I tried my hand at a few other combinations I'd love to try, via Polyvore.

So, are you gaga over Mad Men fashion like me? What do you have to have from the new collection?
