New Year's Eve DIY Wedding

Remember my friend's beautiful DIY wedding? I shared a few of my instagram pics of the night here, but now I'm excited to share her professional wedding pictures from Hey Jonny.

My friend Tricia will be posting about a lot of the projects and stories of putting their wedding together on their new blog: http://oururbanfrontier.com/. She and her husband are masters at finding and executing beautiful DIY projects for everything from home decor to gardening.

Before I get to the wedding, I have to start with the transformation they made to the 'shop'for their venue. It was a spare barn on the father of the groom's avocado ranch, and with the help of friends and family they transformed into a perfect wedding venue.

Incredible, right? They had a vision for this beautiful wedding, and I'm so excited to share it with you!

Phillip and Tricia had their first look at the site of Phil's proposal beneath this beautiful tree at his parent's avocado ranch. Isn't the bench swing he made so beautiful?

The ceremony was just before sundown and all of us guests got a gorgeous view of San Pasqual Valley.

Then it was time to party back at the shop! During happy hour guests drank mojitos and sangria, three kinds of beer made just for the wedding by the groom's brother-in-law (with the kegs stored in an old tub in the back of an old truck), and kahlua in our coffee, made by the bride and groom. The cake buffet was stocked with homemade cakes from Tricia's girlfriends (I made a lavender lemon bundt cake). Gifts were collected in a wheelbarrow in front of the guest book table.

A live band made up of classmates of the bride and a professor kept the dance floor going well into the night. (see if you can spot E and I in that last photo!)

There really was not a detail in this wedding without a personal touch. It was breathtakingly gorgeous, immensely fun, and very them.

Hope you enjoyed!

Instagrammed: a DIY wedding

One of the highlights of our week off was a New Year's Eve wedding!

Beautiful bride! Makes me teary. My floral contribution on the cake table

Tricia, the bride, is a co-worker and friend. Her husband's parents have an avocado ranch on a gorgeous hill in a rural area. It was picture perfect.

This was the most DIYed wedding I've ever attended, and I got to be a part of it. (When I say DIY....they even made all the alcohol they served - beer, wine, mojitos, sangria, and kahlua!)

The outdoor scene. The groom and his brother made beer for the occasion.

I helped set the reception up on Friday & Saturday. The bride and groom built and stamped succulent boxes for the table centerpieces, with lanterns. The table runners were strips of burlap. We put together all the flowers during the rehearsal on Friday evening, just like I did the day before my own wedding!

Succulent and lantern centerpieces Succulent wall! Weighs 500+ lbs but so gorgeous.

The bride and groom created this monstrous succulent wall out of a pallet. It weighed over 500 lbs, and then spent 2 months gradually tilting it up to the roots of the plants would hold when it was upright.

I can't wait to get the professional pictures to share, because once it got dark, my iPhone wasn't doing the place justice, but the whole wedding turned out beautifully with a sunset ceremony, a live band (of friends!), and a cake buffet. I made two lavender lemon bundt cakes you see below :-)

There is something so electric about weddings of friends. As someone who has been married for two and a half years I feel so much excitement for the newness and the romance of marriage on a wedding day. But I also I feel joy that another friend gets to experience the wonder and struggle and comfort and completeness of marriage.

Nom! Lavender lemon bundt cake out of the oven- now its my turn to get ready Lavender lemon bundt cake
Here comes the bride! Gorgeous!
Live band. So good. Thank you from bride and groom

Happy New Year indeed.

two years

To my love, on our second anniversary.

IMG_7972edbw2

I can hardly believe we've lived and loved together as husband and wife for two years. It may be cliche, but it's not an exaggeration to say that I love you more now than I did on that muggy June day two years ago.

many waters cannot quench love.
(Song of Songs 8:6,7)

I love you, sweet.

Will & Kate: a romantic early morning

I'm one of the 2 billion people who watched the Royal Wedding live (yes, at 3am PST), and it was so worth it.

I slept over at my in-laws so I could get up to watch it early since we don't have cable at home.

I'll keep this sweet and simple, I just to remember this moment.
It was stunning, romantic, regal and simply perfect! I loved every minute. And despite the serious lack of sleep I'll experience today, I can't wait to tell my future daughters that I got to see this when it happened.

Things I loved:
  • Reading lips--from Will's "You look beautiful" during the ceremony to Kate's "Wow" when she stepped onto Buckingham's balcony. Such an intimate glimpse into such a special day.
  • The hats! Need I say more?
  • Seeing Kate's mom, proud smiles and a little teary-eyed
  • The ceremony. I thought it was just beautiful, and impressive. The prayers, hymns and message were all wonderful.
  • How excited the crowds were, but calm and peaceful
I'll be swooning all day. Have a lovely weekend, friends!

We've got a Latte Love: Party all night long

We opted to wait until after dinner for our first dances, so after the toasts we just enjoyed each other's company and yummy food.

We tried a pork and beef option at our tasting and weren't totally impressed, so this was our menu:
Garden salad

Minestrone soup

Asparagus with feta

Roasted garlic mashed potatoes

Lemon Chicken Piccata
Chicken Florentine (to DIE for)
Baked ziti

We ate enough, maybe even too much! I had heard enough from my Weddingbee girls that you should eat whenever possible on the wedding day, and I have to say I was stuffed at the end of the night!
The drawback of this, was that we were so busy eating, we didn't get to greet many of our guests. I was really disappointed about this the day after the wedding, because once we left for our honeymoon, we were moving almost directly to California. So our wedding was the last/only chance to spend time with all my family and our friends.

Our slideshow played in the corner during dinner, which was a great idea for us as people could watch or not watch if they wanted. I have mixed feelings on slideshows (especially long ones) because for newer friends and in-laws, baby pictures aren't always terribly interesting. But people seemed to expect it, and our DJ offered to do it as part of our package--all I had to was send him photos in chronological order!

I'm embedding the three sections of our slideshow here for anyone who is interested, but please feel free to scroll right on past them! (I'll list all the songs used at the end)
Songs
E--
God Made Me by Judy Rogers
Sunshine by Johnny Cash
You're my Home by Billy Joel
Me-
The Dress Looks Nice on You by Sufjan Stevens
In My Life by the Beatles
Us--
Anyone Else But You by the Moldy Peaches
Beauty and the Beast (instrumental) by Alan Menken (let it be known that this was entirely E's choice! Disney has a place in our hearts, but I certainly don't think him a beast)

It took us ages to come up with the songs we did so I hope someone finds them helpful!

Somehow 6pm turned into 8:40 lightning fast and it was time for the dances.

We danced like high schoolers and got lost in the moment. But after the first 30 seconds, we started to realize all the eyes on us and were glad we picked a short song!

I never gave my bridesmaids clear instructions on keeping the "wings" of my bustle under wraps, and I didn't realize i had virtual horns coming out of my backside all night until I saw these pictures. Ugh!

I danced with dad to "My Girl" by the Temptations. A little strange because it's obviously a more romantic song, but we grew up listening to the Temptations in my dad's old honda on cassette tape so it holds many fond childhood memories for us

we laughed and chatted, I did a final spin and we scooted off.

Then E took the dance floor with his mom. They are really close, and the dance was so sweet to watch!

We had asked out guests to wait on the chocolate fountain until we did our first taste, and guests were anxious!
So we each dipped a strawberry and fed it to each other.

and sealed in with a chocolatey kiss

Then it was back to the dance floor for the dollar dance.
BM and MOH ready to collect for us.

It started out slow--we danced to some Rat Pack while a small line formed.

(E also danced with a 2 month old baby! wish we had a picture!)

When things started slowing down, E's groomsmen Austin had our DJ start playing Money Honey by Lady GaGa

The groomsmen surrounded us dancing

and started making it rain with dollar bills!

That really got the party started. We danced (and sang and air guitared)

It was absolutely the time of my life!

The night wore one and we did the traditional bouquet and garter throwing

Then the dancing started to wind down, and we started to say goodbye to our guests.

Welcome, blog world, to my ugly cry face, saying goodbye to Caramel

The night was over.

I only wish I could do it over again, and again!

I'm not finished with recaps, per se, but I am finished with the chronological order of events for the day--which is good enough for me!

IMG_1367edbw

and just in time.
As you read this, E and I are on our way to a little weekend anniversary getaway. I'm so excited for 2.5 uninterrupted days with my husband in bliss. It won't compare to Italy, but it's something
Can't wait to tell you all about it when we're back!
