There was something about arriving in NYC that made me feel like a little girl and at the same time finally a grown up. Most of what I knew about this city was from movies, songs, and novels and it was just as glamorous, hectic, and culturally diverse as I’d imagined (although in places it was a lot smellier than I imagined).
I don’t think I could ever live there, because I’d never want the novelty to wear off!
Breakfast was at Magnolia on Saturday, where E proceeded to sing the SNL song Lazy Sunday.
[We wanted to get to more than one cupcake place, but it wasn't meant to be.]
Maybe Magnolia can be rivaled, but not having anything to compare it to, we were impressed!
We got a great suggestion from Life on Mulberry to take the free Georgetown ferry to see the statue of Liberty, but decided that we wanted to try to get to Ellis Island as well. It's true that you get a much better view of the statue from the ferry than from Liberty Island. She's so huge!
Carly passed on an article from the New Yorker that shed some more light on the historical significance of the Statue (it's not what you'd think!) and some other historical monuments in the city.
Lunch at Katz's deli was so crazy! and YUM. (two inches thick of pastrami on Rye.) I was afraid of a heart attack, but it may have been worth it.
We took a historical neighborhood tour with the Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side and walked through Little Italy, China Town.
But the day wasn't over! Late afternoon we hopped on the subway for Brooklyn where we waited to get our name in at Lucali's, a well-known pizzeria which recently got even more recognition as the owner was wounded in a knife fight in April. (He was there)
To end the day we headed to the Brooklyn bridge and walked lazily (or rather, limped) across at sunset.
On Sunday, E's best friend Alex and his girl Heidi met up with us in Washington Square park.
We ate brunch (and I felt like a real New Yorker) then strolled through Greenwich Village, Chelsea, West Village.

We were staying in the Upper West Side and took advantage of an afternoon stroll across Central Park, more eating, and went to Redeemer church's evening service at Hunter College.
followed by a frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity
(in case you were wondering -- yes, it was overrated...but still worth experiencing.)
Monday we caught out flight to Milan, but not before stopping at Zabars one more time for breakfast, and reading in Central Park all morning. Bliss.
New York, I loved ya. Hope to see you again soon!
